Post staffer Tom Kavanagh recently attended aviation camp in Huntsville, Ala., with his son. Here's his reporter's notebook.

Total: $1,289

Airfare: $470 for two | Taxi fare: $21 | Camp: $798 for two

GETTING THERE

Round-trip, nonstop flights from Reagan National to Huntsville can be found for as low as $225 on US Airways and Delta, slightly higher on United. The best nonstop fare out of Dulles recently was $235 on United. Flights from BWI Marshall recently started at $237 but are not nonstop.

STAYING THERE

Meals and housing are included in the cost of Space Camp programs. Three-day weekend Aviation Challenge camps (held throughout the summer, though spaces are going quickly) are $399 per person. Four-day AC camps (held July 3-6, Sept. 4-7 and Dec. 31-Jan. 3) are $449.

The U.S. Space Camp is run by the Geospatial Training and Application Center at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center, Alabama's No. 1 tourist attraction. The new "Star Trek" movie is currently showing at the center's Imax theater.
