Getting There

From the Beltway, travel south on Interstate 95, then southwest on U.S. 15 to Orange, then Route 231 to Gordonsville. Take Route 231, Route 22, U.S. 250 and I-64 to Route 20 toward Scottsville. Turn right on Route 726, and follow signs to Hatton Ferry.

Where to Stay

High Meadows Vineyard Inn (55 High Meadows Lane, Scottsville, 434-286-2218, combines two houses, from 1832 and 1882, with seven tastefully decorated rooms at $150-$350.

Where to Eat

Pee Wee's Pit Barbecue (485 Valley St., Scottsville, 434-286-7744) serves generous platters of pork barbecue and fried chicken, with sides, for $6-$7. Closed Tuesday and Thursday. Donna's Place (370 Valley St., 434-286-7373) offers sandwiches and salads for about $6. Closed Tuesdays.

What to Do

James River Runners (Hatton Ferry Road, three miles upriver from Scottsville, 434-286-2338, offers kayak, canoe, raft and tube trips. A solo kayak rents for $38 for a nine-mile trip (includes shuttle service), $28 for a three-mile trip. James River Reeling & Rafting (265 Ferry St., Scottsville, 434-286-4386, runs the same stretch of river but adds a quiet section just above Scottsville. A solo kayak costs $38 for a 12 1/2 -mile trip, $28 for a seven-mile trip.
