After having a night to sleep on the lead, Chantilly put together a strong second half to complete an 8-5 win over Robinson in the boys' lacrosse state semifinals last night at Westfield.
The Chargers, last year's state champs, will play for the title Sunday against Langley, the only public school team to beat Chantilly in the last two seasons. The Saxons topped the Chargers, 6-4, in the Northern Region semifinals on May 18.
"When we lost to them, we knew we'd see them again and hopefully for the championship," said Chantilly goalie Derek Kegerreis, who finished last night with 10 saves. "I don't think we played our best game against them so they won't know what's coming."
The Chargers led Robinson 5-3 at halftime on Wednesday night, but lightning and an hour-long storm forced the postponement to last night.
Chantilly scored the first goal of the third quarter and led 7-4 entering the fourth. Both Kevin Egan and Joey Marson had two goals and one assist to lead the Chargers.
The girls' matchup between Robinson and Chantilly has also been moved to Sunday. Both games are at Westfield, with the girls at 6 and the boys at 8.
Suitland Promotes Assistant
Suitland has promoted former assistant coach Ed Shields to be its football coach, replacing the late Nick Lynch.
Shields had coached defensive backs at Suitland for the past four seasons and has been president of the Prince George's Coaches Association the past three years. He was the head coach at Northwestern from 1996 to 2001, guiding the Hyattsville school to the Maryland 4A semifinals in 1998 in the only playoff appearance in school history.
Lynch, who coached at Suitland for 13 years and won two Maryland 4A championships, died Dec. 31 in a car accident.
"Obviously, the first challenge is getting past the loss that we had," Shields said. "That's probably the biggest challenge, how well we deal with that, trying to get past our loss and doing things that would make Nick proud." . . .
Good Counsel also turned to one of its assistants to fill a coaching vacancy, promoting Blair Mills to replace Mike Hibbs as its boys' basketball coach. Mills, 27, played at Catholic University and had been on Good Counsel's staff the past five seasons.
