Helping People Speak for Themselves

"I Can Speak for Myself, If You'll Let Me Do So" [June 2] neglected to mention treatment for speech and voice problems that result from Parkinson's, such as reduced volume, monotone speech and imprecise articulation. The Lee Silverman Voice Treatment program was developed over 20 years ago and is an intensive program that consists of 16 one-hour treatment sessions for a month. Research shows this kind of program can help, and the results can last up to two years.

Visiting an otolaryngologist who specializes in voice disorders may also help.
