Child-Care Providers Might Get More Money

Home-based child-care providers across Maryland will receive a financial boost starting in October if they approve their first contract with the state. About 4,700 providers who are represented by Service Employees International Union 500 could receive a state subsidy rate increase averaging almost 3 percent. It would come from the federal stimulus bill.

Laurel Man, 28, Is Killed in Car Crash

A 28-year-old Laurel man was killed and four others were injured early yesterday after his car hit a utility pole on Good Hope Road in the Colesville area, Montgomery County police said.

Police said Genry Obdulio Vasquez Gonzalez had been driving on New Hampshire Avenue before leaving the road.

Two-Car Collision Leaves Man Dead

A Mount Airy man was killed late Thursday after his vehicle crossed a double yellow line and collided with another vehicle. Wayne Wagner, 26, was traveling north on Route 32 near Linden Church Road when the head-on collision occurred, police said.

The other driver, Michael Mutchler, 43, of Odenton was taken to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center and listed in critical condition. Four people in his car, including Mary Mires, 44, and three children who were in the back seat, were in stable condition at another hospital.
