Woman Struck, Killed by Metro Train at Bethesda Station

There are major delays on the Red Line after a woman who "intentionally placed herself on the tracks" at the Bethesda Metro station was struck and killed by a train, said Metro spokeswoman Candace Smith.

The incident occurred at about 1 p.m. The Bethesda Metro Station was closed for about 20 minutes while authorities investigated. Trains are still sharing a track in the area, and because of previously scheduled maintenance, trains are also using a single track between Van Ness and DuPont Circle.

"People should avoid that section of the Red line for the latter part of the afternoon," Smith said. Metro said shuttle bus service is operating between Medical Center and Friendship Heights.
