Virginia Tech men's basketball coach Seth Greenberg said this week that he has not been contacted about the coaching vacancy at Southern California. In a telephone interview, Greenberg said that his entire focus is on continuing to build the Hokies and the Virginia Tech "brand."
Multiple published reports have included Greenberg as among the possible candidates for the USC job, which opened up after Tim Floyd resigned last week amid allegations that he gave money to a person representing star player O.J. Mayo. Greenberg, who once coached at Long Beach State, has connections in the Southern California area and has a clean résumé and reputation. Both would likely be welcomed by USC, but Greenberg was resolute about remaining at Virginia Tech, where he said he is happy and committed.
On Wednesday, the Los Angeles Times reported that P.J. Carlesimo and Reggie Theus, who have both college and NBA coaching experience, were two of the leading candidates for the USC job.
Earlier this spring, Greenberg's name was linked to the Arizona opening, which was eventually filled by former Xavier Coach Sean Miller. In six seasons at Virginia Tech, Greenberg has twice been named ACC coach of the year. The Hokies return four starters next season, including star guard Malcolm Delaney.
