Fedorov Is Coy on Future

LAS VEGAS, June 18 -- With free agency set to begin in two weeks, Sergei Fedorov's future with the Washington Capitals remains unsettled.
Fedorov, who was in Las Vegas to present the Hart Trophy at the NHL Awards Show, reiterated his desire to return for another season in Washington but acknowledged that he doesn't know where he will end up.
The 39-year-old center declined to go into details about his negotiations with the Capitals, but did say that his recent trip to Russia was not made with the intention of trying to secure a deal with a team in the Kontinental Hockey League as previously believed.
"I went on vacation," Fedorov said.
Fedorov also would neither confirm nor deny that he has a deal on the table to sign with Metallurg Magnitogorsk of the KHL. A published report last month claimed he has agreed to terms on a two-year deal that would pay him $3.8 million per season.
"Reports are reports," Fedorov said. "It was [written] during the playoffs that I already had signed somewhere."
"I like the hype," he added with a laugh. "It sounds great. But it sounds like someone is jumping the gun and put words in my mouth and my agent's mouth. It's interesting."
Pressed on the matter, Fedorov said: "In a private sense, maybe I did or maybe I didn't. But it's not something I'm going to discuss in the media, period. My main goal was to go to Russia and relax and have a good time. And I did. I didn't think too much about hockey."
He said he plans to meet with agent, Pat Brisson, today or tomorrow here in Las Vegas so the two can discuss his options.
"Yeah, I [want] to re-sign with Caps," Fedorov added. "But if not, there are other possibilities. I don't have a strict plan. I had a good time in Washington. But there's not much I want to say anymore because it's part of the negotiations."
General Manager George McPhee confirmed on Wednesday that negotiations with Fedorov are ongoing and that he'll have more to say on the matter as July 1 approaches.
Update on Steroid Probe
Commissioner Gary Bettman said the league's investigation into steroid allegations made by an accused Florida drug dealer has not turned up any wrongdoing by the Capitals.
