As a veteran Virginia voter, mainly in the Democratic column, I can tell you the two main reasons I didn't vote for Terry McAuliffe for governor in the primary [Metro, June 16]. First, the aggravation of his campaign's daily barrage of phone calls -- four or five a day on some days -- built up over the last weeks of the campaign. We are on a do-not-call list, but Mr. McAuliffe's calls got through.

The second reason is much more substantial and goes to the heart of what is wrong with the Virginia gubernatorial process: the one-term limit.

We have elected some very good governors in recent years, but the state doesn't get the most benefit from them because no sooner do they get some experience in the job than they are looking for another, and we begin the tiresome process of examining candidates. Our current governor didn't even wait to finish his job before he took a position with the Democratic National Committee. The one-term limit is a disservice to the state's residents and an invitation to carpetbaggers to get in and get out on their way to a national career.

I would like to see a limit of three four-year terms so gubernatorial candidates will see the position as substantial rather than transitional, and our governors can be rewarded for good governance or ejected for lack of it. Then too many phone calls may not be a critical factor in how I vote.
