Mayor's 'Green Summer' Corps to Employ 800
Mayor Adrian M. Fenty (D) has launched the second year of the Green Summer Jobs Corps, a program designed to employ District residents ages 14 to 21 in environmentally friendly industries.
The project's 800 participants will work in four areas: energy, watersheds, trees and parks. After attending a two-day seminar, participants will work throughout the city.
The District Department of the Environment started the job corps last summer. The program's size doubled this year, making it, along with the Mayor's Conservation Corps, the largest green-collar job training program in the United States.

Cab Fare Increase Capped at 5 Percent
Mayor Adrian M. Fenty (D) has authorized the city's taxicab commission to raise fares by as much as 5 percent, but no more.
In an executive order signed last week, Fenty delegated to the commission his authority to review and adjust taxicab meter rates by as much as 5 percent.
Fenty's order limits fare increases to one per year. The commission cannot establish any new surcharges without the mayor's approval either.
A 5 percent increase is about 7 1/2 cents per mile under the District's fee structure.
