A Deadly, But Not Isolated, Metro Crash

Some previous Metro accidents:

1982 A six-car Orange Line train bound for New Carrollton derailed near the Smithsonian Station when an improperly aligned switch caused it to enter the wrong track. Three passengers were killed.

1996 A Metrorail train crashed into the rear of another in the rail yard at the Shady Grove Station at the end of the Red Line, killing the train operator.

2004 The brakes of an out-of-service Metro train malfunctioned in a tunnel between the Woodley Park and Cleveland Park stations and slammed into another train, which had just picked up passengers at Woodley Park and was poised to enter the tunnel. The impact sheared the aluminum shell off one rail car and sent 20 people to hospitals with minor injuries.

2007 A Green Line train derailed and slammed into the concrete wall of the tunnel at the Mount Vernon Square Station, injuring about 20 people.
