Eight finalists will compete Sunday in the Ms. Senior D.C. Pageant, at 2:30 p.m. at the University of the District of Columbia, 4200 Connecticut Ave. NW, main auditorium, Building 46.
Each of the contestants, who are 60 or older, will compete to represent the District in the Ms. Senior America Pageant in October.
The contestants will have an interview with a panel of judges who will evaluate them on their philosophy of life, their talent and evening gown presentations. Ms. Senior America Olivia Haley will perform at the event and help crown Ms. Senior D.C. 2009.
Tickets will be available at the door for a $15 donation. For information, call 202-724-5622.
The pageant is sponsored by the D.C. Senior America Cameo Club, Family Matters of Greater Washington and the D.C. Office on Aging.
Aging-in-Place Program Aided by D.C. Council
Dupont Circle Village, an aging-in-place program, recently received a $25,000 grant from the D.C. Council.
The program allows the elderly to remain in their homes with assistance from volunteers. The Dupont Circle program, with 53 members and more than 40 volunteers, is one of several in the District patterned after an effort in Boston's Beacon Hill neighborhood.
Volunteers help members with their computers, transportation to medical appointments and handyman work. Two Dupont Circle members are pioneering a "buddy program," checking with each other every morning to be sure nothing is awry. Members enjoy communal activities, including walking and biking groups, guided museum tours and theater outings. To volunteer with Dupont Circle Village, call Elaine Rand at 202-436-5252.
