A motorcyclist was killed early this morning when he was struck by a car that allegedly ran a red light crossing Route 1 in College Park, Prince George's County police said.

Neither the victim, who was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital, nor the driver of the car was immediately identified. The investigation is continuing.

Prince George's County police spokesman Larry Johnson said the collision occurred shortly before 5 a.m., at the intersection of Route 1 (Baltimore Avenue) and Greenbelt Road.

Route 1, a major thoroughfare into Washington from the northeast, was shut down and is expected to remain closed for much of the morning.

Johnson said the motorcycle was headed south on Route 1 when the car, reportedly driving west on Greenbelt Road, allegedly drove through a red light onto Route 1.

Route 1 was closed from Route 193 (University Boulevard) to Tecumseh Street, Johnson said.
