In Dupont Circle and Chinatown, we spotted a local woman and visiting newlyweds making bold sartorial statements while sticking to understated, classic pieces and neutral color palettes. Here, they prove basic doesn't mean boring.

Patricia Sosrodjojo, 28, Washington
For Sosrodjojo, shopping in the District just isn't up to snuff. "I do a lot my shopping when I'm in Asia," where she visits several times a year, the investment officer says. Singapore was the source of her hobo-style white leather handbag, embellished with metal-trimmed tassels. She pairs the bag with a crisp white United Colors of Benetton fitted blazer, a nautical-style navy-and-white striped top from H&M and dark-washed, straight-leg jeans. Her always-classic black Chucks are perfectly broken-in. "They're finally in that good beat-up state," she says.
Why we stopped her: Sosrodjojo's ensemble is office-appropriate (at least for a Friday) because it sticks to a neutral, classic color palette and is super-casual yet polished: Her neatly patterned tee and crisp white blazer are a step up from a basic T-shirt and hoodie, and her well-worn sneakers are stylish and clean instead of clunky and grass-stained.
Alli Moyer, 23, and Kellyn Moyer, 21, San Diego
Newlyweds Alli and Kellyn Moyer make a joint casual-cool statement, thanks to budget-friendly basics and a just-coordinated-enough color scheme. Alli, a preschool teacher, scooped up her dress, tights and retro-chic sunglasses at Target and pairs them with a vintage braided cotton belt and Payless patterned flats. Kellyn picked out his vintage button-down from a relative's closet, then used sewing skills he picked up in a high school class to tailor it to his size. Slim black Levi's jeans, H&M canvas sneakers and Ray-Bans complete the look.
Why we stopped them: These California natives, spotted leaving the National Portrait Gallery during a honeymoon trip to the District, nodded to a shared taste for all things retro while keeping comfort in mind. "I always wear black jeans and a button-down or a flannel shirt. I like an older, more classic style," says Kellyn, a worship leader and pastor. Alli takes a bit of inspiration from Audrey Hepburn movies, sticking with clean lines and classic patterns such as gingham, stripes and polka dots.
