Police had restricted or shut off traffic for several hours in the area around the scene in the 11100 block of Georgia Avenue before entering around 7:40 p.m.

Police said they had been told the man was in the apartment and that it was not clear whether he had a weapon or held a hostage.

The area is near Wheaton Plaza and the Wheaton station on the Metro rail system's Red Line.
