Resources for First-Time Vegetable Gardeners

-- Read the Loudoun County Master Gardeners' quarterly newsletter, the Trumpet Vine, at Subscribers get a weekly e-mail report on tasks at the demonstration garden that they can apply to their own plots.

-- The Web sites of the Virginia Cooperative Extension,, and the University of Maryland's Home and Garden Information Center,, give details on extension services in each county, including plant clinics and help by telephone or e-mail.

-- U-Md. this year launched a site called Grow It Eat It ( that offers advice and seeks to create a statewide network of gardeners to share knowledge, pictures and recipes.

-- In the District, Master Gardeners hold a plant clinic at the H Street FreshFarm Market (625 H St. NE) the third Saturday of the month, from 9 a.m. to noon. Residents with questions can also contact Sandy Farber Bandier, the city's environmental extension agent, at 202-274-7166 or
