BALTIMORE, June 29 -- The frustration set in long before the bottom of the sixth inning on Monday when both Manager Dave Trembley and second baseman Brian Roberts took turns yelling at home plate umpire Jerry Layne from the top step of the Baltimore Orioles' dugout.
The outbursts were likely triggered by far more than just Layne's called third strike on Roberts that ended the fifth inning and the Orioles' lone threat against Boston Red Sox starter Jon Lester.
There was the 14 Red Sox base runners through six innings, each one loudly cheered in the Orioles' home ballpark. There was Boston right fielder J.D. Drew's bid at the cycle, which came up just a double short on the two-year anniversary of Aubrey Huff hitting for the cycle at Camden Yards. But the overriding source of frustration from the Red Sox's 4-0 victory before an announced 36,548 had to be the continued inability to mount any offense against Lester, who is seemingly automatic every time he takes the mound against the Orioles.
In seven scoreless innings, Lester (7-6) allowed five hits, struck out eight and walked none, allowing only one Oriole to get into scoring position. The Orioles put runners on first and second in the ninth inning and force all-star closer Jonathan Papelbon into the game, but catcher Matt Wieters was retired on a diving play by Jason Bay in shallow left field to end it. It was Papelbon's 19th save.
In two starts against the Orioles this year, Lester has pitched 14 scoreless innings, surrendering only nine hits while striking out 17. Over 10 career starts against the Orioles, Lester is 8-0 with a 2.18 ERA.
The Orioles' one highlight came in the fourth inning when Adam Jones extended over the center field wall and robbed Kevin Youkilis of a home run. But by then, the Orioles trailed 4-0 after the Red Sox teed off on rookie starter Jason Berken, 0-4 with an 8.51 ERA in his past five starts.
