Virtual Coupons

Here's something for those who shop with coupons, and those who don't because they think it's a hassle. Web-based services that just launched in the Washington area let shoppers use coupons without having to clip them, file them and remember to schlep them to the store. I tried it, and it works.

The premise: Product coupons you find on the Internet are linked to your frequent-shopper grocery store card. When you buy the product and swipe your card, the coupon savings are automatically applied.

Food Deserts vs. Swamps

Why are so many Americans so fat? The conventional wisdom blames a confluence of factors: Unhealthful food is less expensive and more widely available than fresh fruits and vegetables. The conventional solution: Make healthful food more easily available, especially in low-income areas, and watch America's extra pounds melt away.

Not so fast, says a report released today by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. A broad review of the literature reveals no significant evidence that increased access to fruits, vegetables, low-fat milk and whole grains actually reduces body mass index (BMI).
