AFGHANISTAN
Violence Kills Dozens
Airstrikes and ground battles have killed at least 28 Taliban fighters and two civilians in the past two days, and an insurgent suicide bombing on the border claimed two more lives in Afghanistan, authorities said Tuesday.
The U.S. military said it had called in airstrikes in remote mountains in eastern Afghanistan near the border with Pakistan overnight and killed more than a dozen Islamist fighters in bunkers.
A local official said 22 men were killed, many of them foreign nationals.
Also on the border with Pakistan, a suicide attacker blew himself up at a checkpoint Tuesday, killing a policeman and a 12-year-old, a provincial government spokesman said.
Meanwhile, a clash erupted Monday in the northern province of Baghlan after Taliban fighters demanded a "tax" from farmers, who called in police.
Fifteen fighters were killed, police said.

ISRAEL
Drone Use Condemned
Missile-firing Israeli drones unlawfully killed at least 29 Palestinian civilians during the Gaza Strip war, Human Rights Watch said Tuesday.
Drone operators failed to exercise proper caution "as required by the laws of war" in verifying that their targets were combatants, the New York-based monitoring group said.
Israel has a fleet of spy drones but refuses to confirm or deny whether some carry weapons. Its military cast doubt Tuesday on Human Rights Watch's research methods -- a criticism echoed by some independent experts -- and asserted in a statement that all Israeli actions "conform to international law, as do the weapons and munitions used."
