At a time when the recession is causing many furniture stores to scale back or even shut down, custom furniture maker Samuel S. Case has opened a showroom on Kensington Antique Row.

"We used to do a bit of business with residents from Montgomery County" who drove out to the Purcellville showroom, says owner Sam Case. "But as traffic has gotten worse and gas prices have gone up, that dried up." Case hopes the new 2,000-square-foot store, which opened last month, will attract some of those former customers.

The Kensington store is about one-third the size of the Purcellville location, so it will showcase only the company's most popular pieces, including 18th-century, Mission and transitional-style furnishings. Shoppers can special-order other items or visit the Purcellville store or the factory and clearance center in Berryville, Va.

The Kensington showroom is at 3730 Howard Ave. For more information, call 800-985-2725 or visit http://www.sscase.com.
