Independence Day Holiday Closings
Alexandria: City government offices will be closed tomorrow.
Arlington: All county administrative offices, courts, schools, public libraries and nature centers will be closed tomorrow. All community centers will be closed for the weekend (Friday through Sunday). The skate park will operate on holiday hours.

Parking meters will not be enforced.
The Gulf Branch and Long Branch nature centers will be closed tomorrow, but park grounds and trails will be open. On Saturday, Wakefield Pool is open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Yorktown Pool is open from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Washington-Lee Pool is closed. There will be regular service tomorrow for trash and recycling collection, including brush and metal.
Office, Residential Towers Site Plan Is Approved
The Alexandria City Council has approved a site plan for office and residential towers one block from the Eisenhower Avenue Metro station. The project, called the Eisenhower Gateway, will include two 15-story office buildings and two 22-story residential towers. Among the features will be rooftop wind turbines to provide energy to the buildings, the city reported.
The Lane Development project will be at 2250 and 2200 Mill Rd. and have more than 1 million square feet of development, including more than two acres of publicly accessible open space. The city also noted that around 30,000 square feet within the residential buildings will be set aside for affordable rental or for-sale units.
Alexandria Approves Environmental Plan
The City Council approved the first Eco-City Alexandria Environmental Action Plan 2030, which consists of goals, targets and actions spanning the next two decades. Among the goals are reducing greenhouse gas emissions, calling for new buildings to be carbon-neutral by 2030, making one-quarter of the city's energy use come from renewable energy sources by 2020, and making more restaurants and workplaces smoke-free by 2020.
