Nominations Due July 24 For Annual Arts Awards

The Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County has set a 5 p.m. July 24 deadline for submitting nominations for the annual County Executive's Excellence in the Arts and Humanities Awards.

Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett will present the awards Oct. 19 at the Music Center at Strathmore.

"These are tje most prestigious honors conferred by the county on individual artists and scholars, organizations and patrons of the arts and humanities," Leggett said in a statement. Members of the community may nominate individuals or groups.

An award will be presented in each of five categories: Education, Community, Business or Individual Patron, Volunteer and Outstanding Artist or Scholar. Applications must be submitted by e-mail as instructed on the nomination form.

Local Artist's Works Reflect Rural Montgomery

The oil paintings of Connie Gallerizzo are on display in the Arts Barn Invitational Gallery through Aug. 2. An artist's reception is scheduled from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Gallerizzo has been painting for more than 30 years. A hair-color specialist by day, Gallerizzo creates paintings that reflect a passion for color. Many of her works are inspired by the quaintness of rural Montgomery and Howard counties.

Gaithersburg to Present 'Taming of the Shrew'

The city of Gaithersburg and the Maryland Shakespeare Festival present "The Taming of the Shrew" on the lawn and under the stars July 10 and 11 at the City Hall Concert Pavilion, 31 S. Summit Ave. in Olde Towne Gaithersburg.

The free shows are scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. Audience members are encouraged to take a blanket and picnic.

The July 10 performance will be sign-language interpreted. The rain date if both performances are canceled because of inclement weather is 4 p.m. July 12.

Film Festival Features Hits, Classics, Family Fun

The Comcast outdoor film festival will mark its 13th anniversary Aug. 14 to 21 with eight nights of movies that include a mix of box office hits, classics and family favorites.
