Baby Critters, Beware Of Storm Drains
-- Storm drains are dangerous!
Firefighters in Florida rescued 50 baby loggerhead sea turtles from a giant street drain yesterday. Rescuers were called in, and they planned to release the tiny creatures into the ocean.
Survival is tough for baby sea turtles, which are endangered. After hatching, the turtles dash across the sand toward the sea, but they are easy prey, and only one in 1,000 survives to adulthood. The turtles in the storm drain had been lured by nearby streetlights.
This rescue comes six weeks after D.C. firefighters plucked four ducklings from a downtown storm drain. They had found the babies because the mother duck was squawking furiously near the top of the drain.
