Breathe easy, music lovers: Despite a later than usual start this year, the annual Fort Reno Concert Series in Northwest Washington is underway.

Every Monday and Thursday through July 30 (weather permitting), Fort Reno Park gives you a reason to get outside and hear some of the area's best up-and-coming punk, rock and indie bands.

For those new to the area or otherwise unfamiliar with the traditions of Fort Reno, it's not your typical outdoor music show. In the spirit of the local punk scene's all-ages tradition, drugs and alcohol are strictly forbidden; so are glass bottles. All shows begin shortly after 7 p.m. and, out of respect for the nearby residential area, end by 9:30.

The summer's lineup is packed with bands that should be familiar to anyone who hangs out regularly at such clubs as the Black Cat, Rock and Roll Hotel or DC9. But if you don't spend time at those places, don't worry: Fort Reno's laid-back spirit attracts clubgoers and non-clubgoers alike.

This week will feature Arlington rockers Go Home Robot, with openers Sea Monsters and Power Pirate, taking the stage Monday; electro-rock experimentalists Imperial China perform with FFFever on Thursday.

Sure, the summer might seem endless now, but if you have designs on making it to a Fort Reno show this year, don't delay; the series is a few shows shorter than in years past, so there's no better time than this week to get outdoors and soak up the sounds of local music at a Washington institution.
