Excerpts from e-mails, chat postings and online comments:
Reaction to the June 21 stories "A Change in Mission," about Marines in Afghanistan, and "Spin Control," about a yo-yo champion
Jenifer Morris of Springfield e-mails:
How could an editor feel that a cutesy picture about yo-yos superseded the importance and impact of the Magazine's main story about a highly educated D.C. attorney who quits K Street to join the Marines -- undertaking a dangerous and tedious mission? I'm a professional photographer and can appreciate the impact of a well-composed image, however, sometimes common sense and basic priorities should dictate the use of an image to make a statement.
About Mariachi artist Dan Sheehy, featured in the June 21 First Person Singular
H. David O'Malie of Burke writes:
Dan Sheehy, Mariachi los Amigos, is not only an outstanding trumpet player and singer, he also has an encyclopedic knowledge of Mexican culture and music. He is the author of "Mariachi Music in America" and is the retired director of folk and traditional arts at the National Endowment for the Arts. He was a Fulbright-Hays scholar in Mexico and holds a PhD in ethnomusicology from UCLA.
I graduated from college in Mexico. I know that world, and you can't be more authentic than Mariachi Dr. Sheehy.
Reaction to the June 28 XX Files column
Mitch Katz of Falls Church e-mails:
While I enjoy reading the XX Files column each week, I can't help but wonder why you can't find a writer who has had a positive experience with the opposite sex. One week it's a woman who's still angry about her husband leaving her; the next it's a scary encounter with an older male cashier who's secretly taken pictures of the writer. And this week, it's a disheveled man on the bus who's frightening our young XX contributor.
Come on. I'm sure you can find an XX columnist who has some good things to say about the man/men in her life. We get enough of the "Guys are idiots" storyline in Date Lab.
