Police have identified the victim as Crystello Brown, 81. The accident happened about 4:30 p.m. at Dumfries Road and Hastings Drive.

New Alarm System Regulation Begins

A law that requires home and business owners to register their alarm systems with Prince William County police took effect Wednesday.

The Prince William Board of County Supervisors established the requirement after police reported getting several false-alarm calls. The action, police officials said, should cut the number of false-alarm runs and allow the department to better use its resources.

The registration fee is $10 every two years. The first two times police respond to a false alarm at a registered house, they will impose no consequences. With the third false alarm, police said, the security company will be notified and homeowners must be retrained in how to use their system. If false calls continue, additional fees will be applied.

Building Earns Award For Energy Efficiency

The Dr. A.J. Ferlazzo Building received the Energy Star award last week for its superior energy performance.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has given the award to about 6,200 buildings nationwide. To receive the honor, the Ferlazzo Building, off Donald Curtis Drive, had to use 40 percent less energy than the average building while providing "quality and comfort" to its occupants, according to Prince William County.

This is the second county building to be recognized for its efficient energy use. The development services building received the award last year.
