Plans to Extend VRE Service To Haymarket Move Forward
The operations board of the Virginia Railway Express has voted unanimously to move forward with an environmental study related to extending rail service to Haymarket. VRE officials have been authorized to solicit for a vendor to conduct an environmental study of the 11-mile stretch on Norfolk Southern's B line and provide preliminary engineering services.
The work covered by the $5 million contract will begin in August and be funded in part by a grant from the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation's Rail Enhancement Fund, with matching funds from Norfolk Southern and the county. The environmental assessment is expected to take 12 to 18 months.

Social Services' Review Cites Staff, Morale Issues
A state review of the Prince William County Department of Social Services determined that the department suffers from low morale, poor internal communication, work conditions that lead to burnout and insufficient emergency nighttime staffing. The report, released Tuesday, was conducted as the agency continues to reel from the January death of 13-year-old Alexis "Lexie" Agyepong-Glover.
Jack Ledden, director of the county's Department of Social Services, said the report did not surprise him. "We are very much aware we need to make changes," Ledden said. "Had this tragedy not happened, we wouldn't have looked so hard at what we do and how we do it."
