After reading the June 30 front-page story "Madoff Sentenced to 150 Years," I had a question regarding Bernard L. Madoff and other criminals sentenced to significant jail terms. Instead of making the taxpayer foot the bill for Mr. Madoff's imprisonment, could we not use his Social Security benefits to offset the costs of his incarceration?

I do not see this as a deterrent. It simply seems a matter of justice that criminals forfeit these funds as an additional penalty and that victims not pay taxes to keep their assailants behind bars.
