Even before the fireworks and other Fourth of July festivities had ended Saturday, the shootings had started in the District. By early yesterday, two people were dead and five injured, including a 10-year-old girl, in bursts of gunfire in three quadrants of the city.

The first shooting happened in the 800 block of 50th Place NE. Police arrived about 9:15 p.m. and found Malik Kareem Logan, 23, with multiple gunshot wounds. Logan, of the 4200 block of Sixth Street SE, was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

About 12:15 a.m. yesterday, police rushed to the 600 block of Morton Street NW to investigate another shooting. There they found Dewayne Coles, 20, who was dead at the scene with multiple gunshot wounds.

Then at 1 a.m., police received reports of gunfire in the 600 block of 46th Place SE, where they found four people who had been shot, including a 10-year-old girl. She was sent to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

A male of an unknown age was taken to the hospital in critical condition, and two other males were hospitalized with injuries that were not life-threatening.

A fifth victim, a 21-year-old woman, was reportedly taken to the hospital before police arrived.

The identities of all five were being withheld because they are considered witnesses in the case.

Police have also arrested and charged a man in connection with an earlier incident, the killing of Taylor McFadden, 25, early Saturday.

Police said they heard about a possible assault at an apartment building in the 4800 block of New Hampshire Avenue NW, arrived there shortly after midnight and found McFadden, a building resident who had been stabbed several times. McFadden was taken to a hospital in critical condition and died of his injuries about 10 p.m. Saturday.

An investigation led police to arrest and charge Charles Edward Jones Jr., 47, of Northwest Washington with assault with a deadly weapon Saturday.

Those charges were upgraded to second-degree murder while armed after McFadden's death.
