It's no wonder the Washington Kastles have gotten off to a winless start in their second season of World TeamTennis.

The nucleus of the squad had to wrap up some unfinished business at Wimbledon over the weekend and, as a result, missed the first two road games.

It was time well spent, as Serena Williams, the Kastles' marquee player, defeated her sister Venus to win her third Wimbledon title (and the 11th major of her career) and then teamed with Venus to win a fourth Wimbledon doubles title.

Kastles player Rennae Stubbs formed half the duo upended by the sisters in the final on Centre Court.

And on Sunday, Leander Paes, a nine-time Grand Slam doubles champion who returns for a second season with the Kastles, played in Wimbledon's mixed doubles final.

With Stubbs and Paes in the lineup for tonight's home opener, the Kastles (0-2) ought to be well positioned for the season's first win.

But the main attraction will be five-time Wimbledon champion Venus Williams, who'll supply plenty of star wattage for the visiting Philadelphia Freedoms, who could use a spark, as well, off to an 0-2 start.

The sisters won't square off against each other in Washington, however. Serena makes her lone home appearance for the Kastles on July 14.

Tonight's home opener marks the first competitive event Venus has played in Washington, and she looks to be in impressive form, having lost just two sets throughout her Wimbledon campaign.

The Kastles bring other big names to town later this month.

Anna Kournikova's season has been derailed by a wrist injury, but she'll travel to Washington anyway tomorrow to cheer her St. Louis Aces, sign autographs and take part in a tennis clinic.

And seven-time Grand Slam champion John McEnroe, whose quick wit and reflexes remain intact at 50, visits with his N.Y. Sportimes on July 16.
