Hundreds of rail commuters experienced long delays leaving the District this evening after switch problems kept their trains at Union Station.

As of 7:30 p.m., at least three MARC trains and two VRE trains were affected. Delays amounted to an hour or more.

One train was held on each of the three MARC lines--Brunswick, Camden and Penn. On VRE, the delays affected one train on the Manassas line and one on the Fredericksburg Line.

MARC said the problem stemmed from a malfunction in the air compressor that is used to operate the switches.
