State Seeks Nominees For Farmers' Hall of Fame

The Maryland Department of Agriculture is accepting nominations of farmers and farm families for the Governor's Agriculture Hall of Fame.

Any family that derives its income mainly from farming is eligible. Since 1991, when the Hall of Fame was established, 39 families from 21 counties have been inducted. Nomination forms are available from the Agriculture Department or cooperative extension offices.

A local committee will review nominees and forward a selection to a state committee. The local nominations are due to the state by Aug. 21.

For information or a nomination form, contact Buddy Bowling at 410-841-5891 or bowlingo@mda.state.md.us, a University of Maryland Extension office or http://www.mda.state.md.us.

The agency is encouraging users to comment about the site at communications@sha.state.md.us.

Cove Point Lighthouse Announces Summer Hours

The Calvert Marine Museum's Cove Point Lighthouse has reopened for the summer. The grounds are open from 1 to 4 p.m. daily through next month. In September, the site will be open from 1 to 4 p.m. on weekends.

The lighthouse, at 3500 Lighthouse Blvd. (Route 497) in Lusby, was built by John Donahoo of Havre de Grace in 1828. It was designed to mark one of the most narrow parts of the Chesapeake Bay and to guide ships into the Patuxent River.

In addition to the tower-style lighthouse, visitors can see the Keeper's House, a duplex where the lighthouse keeper and his assistant and their families lived; the fog signal building, which has been renovated as an education center; a radio station building; and an observation deck overlooking the Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant.

Cove Point is Maryland's oldest continuously operating lighthouse. Overnight stays are available for families and Scout troops. For information, call 410-326-2042 or visit http://www.calvertmarinemuseum.com.
