MARYLAND MOMENTS
Family's Tree Has Military Branches
Following in the footsteps of their older sister, who graduated this spring from the U.S. Naval Academy, twin sisters Tonnie and Terrie Williams of Edgewater took the academy's oath of office last week.
The twins joined about 1,230 other members of the Class of 2013 on Induction Day, or I-Day, at the academy in Annapolis. Known as plebes, the freshmen received haircuts and uniforms and learned how to wear their hats and salute.
"I'm excited and nervous for them. I know what it is like and what they are feeling today at the start of their plebe summer experience," said their older sister, Ensign Toshi Williams.
Each member of the Class of 2013 receives a copy of "Reef Points," a book that serves as an introduction to the academy and the Navy. New students are required to memorize much of it.
Knowing what's in store for her sisters over the next several weeks, Toshi signed their books, saying, "If I can do it, you can do it," followed by a heart.
The twins said that having a sister who has gone before them will help.
"Tonnie and I both know that we have the footprints of Toshi, which will make it easier over the next four years," Terrie said.
The sisters' parents, Harvey and Cathy Williams of Edgewater, also expressed excitement. Both served in the military: Harvey was in the Air Force for 20 years, and Cathy served in the Navy for 21 years.
"Cathy and I are proud and amazed how they are accepting the challenge," the father said.
