Injured Puppy Surrendered

MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. AVE. SW, 3900 block, June 27. The Humane Society received a call about an injured puppy lying in a yard. A responding Humane Society officer found a 3-month-old male brown-and-chocolate brindle mastiff mix limping in a front yard. The officer met with the owner, who said the dog might have been hit by a car when it escaped a few days earlier, and the owner could not afford to take the dog to a veterinarian. The landlord of the property does not allow pets, and the owner surrendered the dog to the society. The puppy was taken to a veterinarian and was under medical treatment.

OGLETHORPE ST. NW, 1-100 block, June 24. The league took in 70 dogs and puppies seized from a puppy mill near Allentown, Pa. The dogs were evaluated by the league's medical center and behavioral specialists. One of the dogs, which constantly held its head in a tilt and walked in circles, was treated for an ear infection. Most of the dogs were made available for adoption July 1, and a few required further work and evaluation.

Kitten Undergoes Surgery

GEORGIA AVE., 7300 block, June 26. The Humane Society took in a 9-week-old kitten and transferred the animal to the league's medical center because it was born without a complete gastrointestinal tract. As a result of the condition, the kitten was unable to eliminate and required urgent surgery. The kitten was recovering well in the clinic.

Labrador's Cough Treated

HYATTSVILLE, Oglethorpe St., 4000 block, June 30. A severely obese 7-year-old yellow Labrador mix was taken to the league's medical center for treatment of a hacking cough. Veterinarians at the league recommended the dog be put on a strict diet to lose weight, cleaned its ears and treated the cough with antibiotics. Radiographs of the dog's chest were suggested if the cough did not improve.

The league will host a free preparatory class led by a certified trainer from 6 to 7:45 p.m. tomorrow for dog adopters. Topics will include house training, socialization and home-alone training. For information, e-mail training@warl.org.
