Feral Cats Make Selves at Home
GAITHERSBURG, Hawkins Creamery Rd., 8300 block, June 23. An animal services officer found four cats at a vacant house, and one appeared to have neurological problems, a symptom of rabies. It was determined that the cats were feral, and a trap was set to catch them. The first cat caught was the one showing symptoms. It was euthanized and sent to a lab for rabies testing, where it was determined that the cat did not have rabies, and the neurological illness was caused by something else. The cats cannot be adopted because they are wild, officials said.
Blacksnake in Living Room
ROCKVILLE, Pommel Dr., 14700 block, June 24. Homeowners reported finding a snake in their living room. A Humane Society agent captured the common blacksnake, determined it was not sick or injured and released it outdoors. Snakes can squeeze through very small openings or a crack in a foundation or can enter a house if a door is not closed properly. They sometimes seek refuge from the heat of the day.
