Documents on Supreme Court Nominee Sotomayor Posted Online

A trove of federal records relating to Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor went online this morning, offering details of her earlier nominations for two federal judgeships.

The largest document release was from the William J. Clinton Presidential Library, which posted more than 5,000 pages of presidential records. Former president Bill Clinton nominated Sotomayor in 1997 for her current job as a judge on the federal appeals court in New York. The Clinton records include court documents, news clippings and internal e-mails about Sotomayor's nomination.

Also, more than 100 other Clinton administration e-mails retrieved from federal electronic files were released today by The National Archives.

More than 75 percent of the documents posted today were already publicly available, according to the White House. Included were over 1,700 pages of district court opinions, over 1,200 pages of reports and speeches, and over 450 pages of questionnaire responses and supporting material, all of which were submitted to the Senate for Sotomayor's confirmation to the Second Circuit.

Sotomayor was nominated in 1991 for a U.S. District Court judgeship in New York by Republican President George H.W. Bush, and his presidential library today released four pages of presidential records about her. The documents and 58 pages of previously released consist of internal memos, biographical materials and letters in support of Sotomayor.

President Obama has nominated Sotomayor to replace retiring Supreme Court Justice David H. Souter. Her Senate confirmation hearings begin Monday.
