U.S. Capitol Police said they arrested 26 activists from a coalition of AIDS groups this morning during an illegal protest in the Capitol Rotunda.
The demonstrators, calling for swifter government action in the fight against AIDS, entered the rotunda carrying signs about 10 a.m. They linked themselves together with a chain and refused to leave, said Sgt. Kimberly A. Schneider, a Capitol Police spokeswoman.
Schneider said 15 men and 11 women were charged with disorderly conduct and unlawful assembly. Tourists were kept away from the scene while the arrests were made.
