I shook my head as I read about the Virginia Department of Transportation's plan to eliminate 19 rest stops this summer ["If Drivers Have to Go, They Have to Go Far," Metro, July 8].
Our family will go on vacation this summer, using roads where VDOT is eliminating rest stops. There are better ways to save money without torturing families with small children or tourists who are on vacation. A VDOT spokesman noted that people could use McDonald's restrooms. Nothing against McDonald's, but does anyone at VDOT have children? Try going through McDonald's every hour past the gantlet of fries and milkshakes. Having just driven through several other states, I can say that other areas are more considerate to travelers.
