Josh Hairston, an All-Met basketball player bound for Duke, is transferring from Courtland High to Montrose Christian for his senior season.

Hairston, a 6-foot-8 forward, averaged 23 points, 10 rebounds and 4 blocks last season in leading the Cougars to a 28-2 mark and their first Virginia AA Division 4 state championship. He was named the state player of the year by the Virginia High School Coaches Association and the Associated Press.

Hairston said the title was a key factor in the decision to transfer from his neighborhood public school near Fredericksburg to the private school basketball powerhouse in Rockville.

"Nothing against Courtland, I felt I had done what I promised I would do," Hairston said. "I feel I just need tougher competition to play at Duke. I don't want to be one of the kids who sits the bench for a few years and then plays. I want to be able to play when I'm down there."
