A suspect has been arrested in the fatal shooting Thursday of a teenager near the Nationals Park, D.C. police said last night.

Police Chief Cathy Lanier said the arrest came in the slaying of Kevin D. Allen, 16, of Northwest Washington.

She credited the assistance of the public in bringing about the arrest and said she derived satisfaction in recognizing the involvement of the public. "I like it when the public helps" get suspects "off the street because it makes them feel safer," the chief said in a brief interview.

The name of the suspect was not immediately available.

The victim was found in an alley in the unit block of N Street SW, about 12:30 p.m.
