Thanks for Saving the Bay

In spring the Maryland General Assembly passed significant legislation that will reduce the amount of nitrogen pollution in the Chesapeake Bay and its tidal tributaries.

As enacted, the bill requires the use of nitrogen-removing technology whenever a failing septic system has to be replaced or is installed as part of new construction in Maryland's Critical Area. If not for the leadership of Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller Jr. (D-Calvert), this important bill would not have passed.

We were fortunate to have Miller's support on this bill and his political savvy, which was needed to pass it. Unlike many bills, this one will actually result in measurable pollution reductions as seen most notably in local water quality. Miller's commitment to saving the Chesapeake Bay and his leadership were especially evident during the floor debate and the vote.

The Chesapeake Bay Foundation wants to thank him and his staff for ensuring that the water quality of the bay and its tidal tributaries remains a top priority in Maryland.
