This recent letter describes one of the real-life situations I hope the Metro board will be mindful of as it considers the staff's plan to rehabilitate the Red Line.

Dear Dr. Gridlock:

Sunday afternoon: Trains far apart, so every missed train is a lost 15 minutes. Many people on platform and on train. People getting off train, very orderly, reasonably fast. People on platform waiting for everyone to get off before they start to get on. Good citizens.

A very short time after people start to board, the chime chimes and the door closes and the train moves off and a lot of people on the platform say bad words.

The train stuck to its schedule, but a whole trainload of people learned to ignore Metro's campaign for orderly boarding and to revert to the law of the jungle.

On Thursday, the board will review a big maintenance contract designed to concentrate work on Sunday through Thursday nights, starting at 8 o'clock, probably beginning early next year.

There's a lot to love about the maintenance program, because it tackles many of the escalator, platform, lighting, communications and hot station problems we all complain about.

Plus, the schedule would take some of the burden off weekend riders socked with half-hour delays for track maintenance.
