Paul G. Varoutsos Arlington Lawyer

Paul George Varoutsos, 88, who had a long career as a family and divorce lawyer, died June 25 of congestive heart failure at his home in Arlington County.

Mr. Varoutsos was born in Washington and was a graduate of the old Central High School. After serving in the Navy during World War II, he graduated from George Washington University law school in 1949.

After a short stint as a prosecutor in Arlington, Mr. Varoutsos established a family law practice with Louis Koutoulakos in Arlington in 1951. He practiced law until his retirement in 2005.

He was a member for 70 years of the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association, an organization that promotes Greek culture. He was a founder of St. Katherine Greek Orthodox Church in Falls Church and also helped found the Arlington Bank.

His memberships included the Washington Golf and Country Club in Arlington, where he enjoyed playing golf and gin rummy.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Olga Kaisell Varoutsos of Arlington; two sons, George D. Varoutsos of Arlington, a judge with the Arlington Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court; and Paul J. Varoutsos of Linwood, N.J.; a brother, Perry Varoutsos of Fairfax County; and three grandchildren.

Donald Freiert Sr. Payroll Director

Donald Freiert Sr., 86, a former director of payroll for American University, died of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease June 24 at his home in Columbia.

Mr. Freiert worked at AU for about a decade until he retired in 1988. He previously worked at Equitable Trust in Baltimore, Sealtest Dairies and Chestnut Farm Dairy in Georgetown.

He was born in Buffalo. He graduated from Loyola College in Baltimore in 1944 and received a second bachelor's degree in 1949 from the Baltimore College of Commerce.

He was a member of St. Louis Catholic Church in Clarksville for 33 years. He was a Baltimore Orioles and Colts fan, enjoyed big band music, golf, bowling, crazy hats and humorous stories.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Virginia Freiert of Columbia; six children, Donald V. Freiert Jr. of Columbus, Ohio, Mary Helen Naecker of Calabash, N.C., Jim Freiert of Columbia, Gerry Freiert of Ellicott City, Mark Freiert of Columbia and Anne Marie Hunt of Catonsville, Md.; 20 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
