I found the reaction by "officials" of the D.C. government to Ward 8 D.C. Council member Marion Barry and his office's contract with his girlfriend astounding even by District standards ["Ex-Girlfriend Worked for Barry as Contractor," Metro, July 8].

Some officials "wonder" whether this award was ethical. Well, off course it's unethical. It's virtually the definition of unethical.

And awarding a contract to Donna Watts-Brighthaupt because, Mr. Barry's spokeswoman said, she "was about to lose her house, her car, due to her inability to find employment" is all the evidence needed to show why Mr. Barry can't be trusted to spend government funds in excess of his own salary. With the city treasury, he bought the attention of a younger woman.

This episode gives new meaning to the phrase "stimulus funds."
