The Virginia Department of Transportation's decision to close 19 rest areas ["If Drivers Have to Go, They Have to Go Far," Metro, July 8] was an act of contempt, not just for travelers but for businesses, as well.

Since when is it the responsibility of McDonald's -- the VDOT spokesman's handy proxy -- to provide bathrooms for the public? These are private businesses. Most allow people to use their bathrooms with the understanding that a significant percentage will buy something in the restaurant before getting back on the road.

Will the state compensate McDonald's for the labor and supplies needed to clean up after the additional usage?
