-- Sotomayor confirmation hearings, day three: The Senate Judiciary Committee is expected to continue to question appellate judge Sonia Sotomayor during hearings on her nomination to be a Supreme Court associate justice.
-- Coincidentally, we're sure, Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.) will host a luncheon with Miguel Estrada for members of Congress. Estrada is a native of Honduras and will discuss the recent coup there and the nation's constitution. His name has been in the news of late, mentioned quite often during the Senate Judiciary Committee's opening statements on the Sotomayor nomination. Conservatives have recalled how Senate Democrats in 2003 thwarted his nomination to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit by then-President George W. Bush .
-- The Bureau of Labor Statistics will issue the June Consumer Price Index.
-- The Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee will hold a hearing on "Contraband Cell Phones in Correctional Facilities: Public Safety Impact and the Potential Implications of Jamming Technologies." Witnesses will include state Sen. John Whitmire of Texas; Gary Maynard, secretary of the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services; and former congressman Steve Largent (R-Okla.), now president and chief executive of CTIA, the wireless industry trade group. At issue is the growing desire by states to use phone-jamming technologies to disable contraband cellphones in prisons; wireless companies oppose that.
