Eighteen highway rest stops in Virginia will shut down Monday night, the latest step in the state's struggle to close a $2.6 billion shortfall in transportation revenues.
One more rest area, on Interstate 66 in Manassas, is scheduled to close in September. The shuttered facilities will be stripped of fixtures and equipment that can be used at 23 other rest stops that will continue to operate.
In addition to closing rest areas, cash-strapped officials at the Virginia Department of Transportation also are cutting construction funding by $2 billion over the next six years, reducing administrative and support programs by $391 million, cutting maintenance and operations by $348 million and eliminating 1,450 full- and part-time positions.
