GETTING THERE

US Airways, United and AirTran Airways have nonstop flights from Washington area airports to Portland, Maine. Round-trip fares start at about $149. Bayside is about a two-hour drive from the Portland International Jetport.

WHERE TO STAY

Bayside listings can be found on several rental sites, including Vacation Rentals by Owner, Bayside Cottage Rentals and On the Water in Maine ). Weekly rates from $850 (sleeps four) to $3,750 (sleeps nine). Many cottages are offering discounts from those rates, and some owners will rent for long weekends. Rates from $75 to $500 a night.

WHERE TO EAT

Belfast, just three miles away, has several excellent restaurants:

Darby's Restaurant and Pub (155 High St., 207-338-2339). Offers peekytoe crab melts and gourmet macaroni and cheese, plus an unexpectedly fabulous pad Thai. Lunch entrees $7-$13; dinner $12-$20.
