-- Thirty-year-old Smith & Hawken is planning to close all 56 of its shops and is no longer taking phone or Internet orders. The high-end outdoor furnishings and garden accessories retailer began liquidation sales July 9. Discounts are now about 20 to 30 percent off regular prices, and the markdowns will increase until the inventory is cleared. Shoppers can expect the sale to end in early December, says spokeswoman Su Lok.

Parent company Scotts Miracle-Gro, which bought Smith & Hawken in 2004, analyzed sales figures and concluded the retailer wasn't profitable. "Closing operations was our best option," Lok says.

Local stores are at 1209 31st St. NW in Georgetown; 6705 Whittier Ave., McLean; and 8551 Connecticut Ave., Chevy Chase.

-- After more than 20 years, James Wilhoit Antiques in Old Town Alexandria is closing because Wilhoit, the owner of the store, is retiring and moving to North Carolina.

The store carries American and English 18th- and early-19th-century furniture, all of which must be sold before September. Furniture, paintings, mirrors and other accessories are about 25 percent off. For example, a set of 12 English Mason's ironstone plates was $950 but is now $650.

The store is at 277-B S. Washington St. For more information, call 703-683-6595 or visit http://www.jameswilhoit.com.

-- BoConcept is in the middle of its annual design sale. At all stores, including in Georgetown and at Tysons Galleria, shoppers will find floor samples up to 60 percent off and overstocked leather sofas discounted up to 35 percent. Inventory varies by store, with sale items including an Occa 4300 dining table marked down from $1,200 to $699 and an Indivi 2 leather sofa marked down from $2,199 to $1,640.

The sale ends Aug. 31. Local stores are at 3342 M St. NW and 1763 International Dr., McLean. For details, visit http://www.boconcept.us.

-- The first Adams Morgan summer sidewalk sale is this Saturday. Retailers and restaurants throughout the neighborhood, including home furnishings stores And Beige, Skynear and Co., Toro Mata: The Art of Peru, the Brass Knob and Design Within Reach, will discount items up to 50 percent.

At And Beige, accessories will be 20 percent off, including a faux giraffe-hide pillow marked down from $550 to $440. A discount table outside the store will have half-off items. Garden-inspired architectural pieces will be 20 percent off at the Brass Knob; for example, a terra cotta roof finial was $695 and is on sale for $556.
