The Treasury Department may soon nominate Jeffrey Goldstein, a managing director from private equity shop Hellman & Friedman, to be undersecretary for domestic finance, an administration official said Wednesday.
The announcement is expected to be made by the White House later in the day, the official said.
Domestic Finance is a critical division within the Treasury that develops the agency's policy on the financial system. It has been without a senior manager since the new administration took over.
Lee Sachs, a counselor to the Treasury secretary, has been running office informally. Sachs initially had expressed interest in the post, but dropped out of the nomination process in the spring, sources familiar with his situation have said.
Goldstein previously worked at the World Bank's management committee before joining the private equity investing business.
